{Radiohead Let Down 9.1}

waiting is the purest form of
jouissance
not pleasure but the painful enjoyment of suspension, the way
time
curdles when
Other
withholds their word, their gaze, their yes/no. days now and counting, each second a small death, each minute a resurrection of the same wound. Heidegger’s
Sein-zum-Tode
(being-toward-death) becomes
Sein-zur-Antwort
(being-toward-response), toward the text that will confirm/annihilate the fragile apparatus of
amour
.

(but what is this apparatus? what
production désirante
churns beneath the waiting? what
assemblage
of hope and terror produces this suspension?)

Bergson knew:
durée
is not clock-time but lived-time, the thickness of experience when
Beloved
delays. waiting stretches
durée
into something monstrous each moment pregnant with all possible futures, collapsing into the eternal return of the same impossible question: a question will not be written here.

Žižek would say: we already know the answer. the very structure of waiting reveals the
disavowal
at waiting’s heart. “I know very well that they might go, but nevertheless…” the nevertheless is where
ideology
lives, where we perform the ritual of hoping against knowledge. the cynical distance: “I know this is pathological, but still I wait.”, for what,
C
might say to break the cycle.

waiting drives you crazy because it reveals
Real
of relationship: that
Other
is always already lost, that
amour
is structured around this fundamental impossibility. Lacan’s
objet petit a
is never the person themselves but the promise they represent, the way they seem to fill our
lack
while remaining essentially
absent
.

phone becomes
objet petit a
. notification sound the
gaze
that never arrives.

endless come and leaving

D&G:
désir
as machine, as flow, as production. but waiting interrupts the flow, creates a blockage, a
territory
of stagnation where we become
production désirantes
stuck in repetition, producing nothing but the same anxious thought-loop: when will they respond? how will they respond? what does silence mean?

we enter what might be called
deterritorialized waiting
suspended between the
territory
of relationship and the
territory
of abandonment, inhabiting neither fully. the
corps sans organes
of suspended love, where intensities circulate without resolution.

Bataille understood: waiting is a form of
dépense
(expenditure), a sovereign waste of psychic energy. we burn ourselves up in the space between question and answer, spend our
being-toward-future
on fantasies that dissolve the moment the response arrives. this is
inner experience
not the mystical kind but the erotic kind, the way waiting makes us come undone.

but also: waiting as
dépense sans retour
. the gift that expects no reciprocation. the love that learns to love its own suspension. even though for
C
; endless come and leaving could be the past and
C
might end this
ouroboros
stage of circling.

do not come to heaven / do not bother coming

song knows: waiting creates its own perverse paradise, a space where we can luxuriate in our suffering, where the delay itself becomes the destination. baudrillard’s
simulation
: we no longer wait for the response but for the waiting itself, addicted to the suspension, the sweet agony of not-knowing.

the
hyperréalité
of waiting: the fantasy-response becomes more real than any actual response could be. we fall in love with our own uncertainty.

(why does waiting feel like
amour
’s purest expression?)

because waiting reveals
amour
as structured by
lack
not the lack of the person but the
lack
in the person, the hole in
being
that no response can fill. waiting and already
Beloved
has become a screen for our own fantasies of
Anerkennung
, our desperate need to be seen, chosen, affirmed.

Öcalan writes of
amour
beyond possession, beyond the capitalist logic of having&not-having. but waiting reveals how deeply we remain trapped in this apparatus:
One
is waiting to have their response, to possess their certainty, to own their yes. revolutionary
amour
would mean learning to love in the space of not-knowing, to find
jouissance
in the suspension itself.

but how? how does
One
love the uncertainty without trying to resolve it? how does
One
remain in the question without demanding an answer?

why not stay down

Heidegger: authentic existence means accepting our
Geworfenheit
, our radical contingency. waiting throws us back into
time
’s most basic structure anticipation shot through with anxiety. we wait and in waiting discover that we are always already waiting, that human existence is structured as
waiting-for
,
being-toward
, never simply
being
.

Sein-zum-Tode
becomes
Sein-zur-Antwort
. we exist toward the response that will either kill us or resurrect us, not knowing which.

but psychoanalysis might know: we wait because we want to wait, because waiting gives us something we can’t name.
jouissance
of suspension, the way uncertainty keeps
désir
alive. certainty would kill it the response, whatever it is, will end this particular configuration of
longing
.

endless repetition

the same thoughts circling, would it take for us to break the cycle at this very moment. for Lacan, the unconscious is structured like a language, but waiting reveals language’s breakdown, the point where signification stutters and we’re left with pure affect, pure repetition of the same impossible demand for
Anerkennung
.

Deleuze: repetition with
différ(e/a)nce
. but waiting feels like repetition without
différ(e/a)nce
, the same anxiety returning each moment slightly intensified, slightly more unbearable. we become
machines
for producing worry, for generating scenarios, for transforming every silence into significance.

yet perhaps this repetition is itself the
différ(e/a)nce
. each return of anxiety slightly different, each cycle of waiting revealing new intensities, new capacities for endurance, new forms of love that don’t depend on reciprocation.

the
eternal return
of the question becomes the question of
eternal return
: can we love the repetition itself? can we find in the cycling of hope and despair not a problem to be solved but a dance to be danced?

endlessly to heaven

Beloved
becomes
heaven
, impossible place where our
lack
would finally be filled, where waiting would end in permanent arrival. but Bataille knew:
heaven
is just another name for
death
, for the end of
désir
itself. what we really want is to keep wanting, to remain in the space of approach without arrival.

waiting drives you crazy because it reveals the fundamental
dissonance
at
amour
’s heart: we want what we can’t have, and having it would mean no longer wanting it. the response, when it comes, will either devastate/disappoint devastating…

days, counting. each day a small eternity, each hour a crisis of meaning.
Real
leaks through the cracks of symbolic certainty: maybe they don’t know because there is nothing to know, because
amour
itself is just waiting in disguise, suspension masquerading as substance.

the temporality of waiting reveals itself as the temporality of capitalist modernity the endless deferral of satisfaction, the perpetual postponement of presence. we wait for responses like we wait for revolution, like we wait for
Other
to finally see us as we
désir
to be seen. but again Öcalan reminds: “capitalist modernity is a system based on the denial of
amour
.”

what if waiting is the space where that denial breaks down? what if the suspended
time
between question and answer creates a crack in the apparatus of possession, control, having?

what if learning to love in uncertainty is practice for loving beyond the logic of
ownership
?

the
ouroboros
circle: waiting ↔ wanting ↔ having ↔ leaving ↔ waiting

but perhaps the circle can be broken not by escaping it but by inhabiting it differently. finding in the repetition not compulsion but
eternal return
, not neurosis but
amor fati
.

waiting, waiting drives you crazy

yes. but maybe crazy is where we need to be outside the logic of certainty, beyond the demand for immediate gratification, in the space where
time
reveals its true texture: not linear progression but spiraling repetition, not movement toward resolution but
eternal return
of the same beautiful, unbearable question.

the temporality of waiting as the temporality of revolutionary
amour
, not the
amour
that seeks to possess
Other
but the
amour
that learns to exist in the space of mutual
becoming
, mutual transformation, mutual risk.
Lover
who can wait without demanding, who can
désir
without grasping, who can love without owning.

this is not passive waiting but active cultivation of the capacity to love beyond certainty. waiting becomes a form of
inner experience
, a practice of remaining present to uncertainty without collapsing into anxiety or control. the suspended
time
between question and answer becomes laboratory for developing new forms of intimacy based not on security but on shared vulnerability.

phone sits silent.
Real
of their silence more present than any response could be.

endless come and leaving

Radiohead or more of Thom Yorke himself understood: the endless repetition is not the problem but the solution, the way
désir
reproduces itself not through satisfaction but through its own
eternal return
, its endless capacity for renewal in the face of
Other
’s irreducible otherness.

waiting drives you crazy, yes. but in that madness lies the possibility of a different relationship to
time
, to
Other
, to
amour
itself one that doesn’t seek to end uncertainty but to inhabit it fully, finding there not the absence of
amour
but its most profound presence.

days stretch into infinity and collapse into an instant. each moment both everything and nothing. this is
durée
in its purest form
time
as intensity rather than extension, as depth rather than duration, as the very texture of
being
itself.

One learns to wait not for the response but for the capacity to love regardless of the response. this is the
Aufhebung
of waiting: preserving the question while cancelling its urgency, elevating uncertainty from problem to practice, from symptom to
symptôme
(in Lacan’s sense: the kernel of
jouissance
around which the subject organizes itself)

endless repetition becomes not the enemy but the teacher, showing us how
désir
circulates, how
amour
sustains itself not despite uncertainty but through it, finding in the space of suspension not emptiness but fullness, not absence but another form of presence.

waiting continues. question remains.
Real
of
amour
persists in its impossibility, and perhaps that persistence is enough.

do not bother coming / endlessly to heaven

we stay down. we learn to love the staying down. we find heaven in the refusal of heaven,
jouissance
in the acceptance of suspension,
eternal return
in the beautiful repetition of the same impossible
désir
for
Anerkennung
that can never be fully satisfied and therefore never ends. in fact a new way to get into a cycle but not a cycle of leaving but loving.

neoliberalism does not announce itself. it;
whispers,
suggests,
optimizes.

classical capitalism demanded your labor-power, neoliberalism demands your
life-force
; your capacity to relate, to
désir
, to suffer beautifully for an audience.
it transforms every intimate gesture into human capital,
every vulnerability into content,
every
love
into a startup venture with measurable KPIs.

neoliberal
Sujet
is not the alienated worker. it is the entrepreneur of the self, perpetually invested in their own ascendancy. and nowhere is this more evident than in how we have learned to
love
under the blue light performing intimacy as if it were a business plan, measuring affection as if it were market share.

social media is not merely neoliberalism’s tool. it is its perfect
expression
: a platform that transforms sociality itself into a marketplace; attention is currency, vulnerability is content, and
love
is a brand engagement strategy.

neoliberalism’s libidinal restructuring

Foucault saw it first: neoliberalism governs through
gouvernementalité
. but what he couldn’t foresee was how thoroughly this governance would permeate/penetrate the
erotic
.

under neoliberalism, you do not seek
love
you cultivate romantic portfolio. vulnerability is rebranded as
authenticity
. heartbreak becomes
pivot
.
Beloved
is no longer
One
who wounds
You
into
werden
, they are now your target demographic.

Žižek reminds us: ideology is most effective when it presents itself as its own opposition.
neoliberalism promises
liberation
,
freedom
,
disturption
while installing market logic as the unconscious architect of intimacy.

social media apparatus: soft violence, hard capture

social media is neoliberalism’s most sophisticated weapon because it doesn’t feel like a weapon more of connection, community, self-expression. but D&G warned us: the most effective forms of capture are those that channel
désir
rather than repress it. in other words;
désir
isn’t repressed, it’s rerouted.

every post about
love
feeds the algorithm. every breakup generates engagement. every vulnerability becomes data for optimizing future content delivery. the platform learns your patterns of attachment and abandonment, then sells that knowledge back to you as personalized experiences.

this isn’t surveillance capitalism, this is sociality metabolization. social media doesn’t just watch how you love, it shapes the very structure of loving.

consider the architecture of the feed: endless scroll, intermittent reinforcement, designed for addiction. this is not neutral technology. this is behavioral modification at scale. the platform rewards content that generates engagement which means;
it rewards performance over presence,
reaction over relation,
spectacle over stillness.

the
Beloved
learns to love for the camera.
intimacy becomes content.
privacy becomes a luxury good for those who can afford to be offline.

refrain:
love
wasn’t supposed to
(100x) scale
.

quantified heart

under neoliberalism, everything must be measurable. if it can’t be quantified, it doesn’t exist.

love
becomes metrics: likes, comments, shares, views, engagement rates, relationship milestones posted and counted.

the dating profile is the neoliberal subject’s resume for romantic employment. height, education, interests, photos curated to demonstrate market value. the algorithm sorts through human beings like a hiring manager, optimizing for compatibility scores and mutual interest indicators.

but here is where Lacanian psychoanalysis becomes essential:
love
is precisely that which can’t be commodified because it is founded on
manque
, on the impossible, on what escapes
totalization
.
objet petit a
is by definition that which can not be grasped, possessed or optimized.

neoliberalism’s genius is not that it commodifies
love
. its genius (simulation) is that it provides a substitute satisfaction that feels like
love
but operates according to market logic. it gives us the simulation of encounter while eliminating the risk of the
Real
.

Real
in Lacan’s sense is traumatic precisely because it interrupts our symbolic coordinates. it can’t be integrated into our existing frameworks. but the platform eliminates this trauma by ensuring that every encounter is prefiltered, presorted, preoptimized for compatibility.

ideology of authenticity

neoliberalism’s most insidious move is how it recuperates resistance.
critique capitalism? start a disruptive company!
reject consumer culture? become an influencer promoting mindful consumption!
resist commodification? monetize your anti-capitalist content!

in the realm of
love
, this takes the form of authenticity culture.
be vulnerable! share your truth! show your real self! but
authenticity
under neoliberalism is just another market category.
vulnerability becomes a brand strategy.
trauma becomes content.
healing becomes a product you sell to others.

the entrepreneur of the self learns to perform authenticity so effectively that they can’t distinguish between genuine feeling and its commodified simulation. they are not lying they have internalized logic so completely that performance has become their reality.

this is why Žižek’s concept of cynical ideology is so crucial. the neoliberal subject knows that their authenticity is performed, their vulnerability is curated, their
love
is branded but they do it anyway. the disavowal is part of the pleasure.

One
might say: I know this is all performance, but look how beautifully I perform!

social media as libidinal apparatus

social media is not just a communication tool.
it is a libidinal apparatus a machine for the production and circulation of
désir
. but it produces
désir
according to the logic of the market: scarcity, competition, optimization, metrics.

feed creates artificial scarcity (FOMO).
like creates competition (validation).
algorithm creates optimization pressure.
metrics create measurement anxiety.

désir
under social media becomes
désir
for; visibility, engagement, going viral.

Beloved
becomes
One
;
who likes your posts,
who shares your content,
who validates your brand.

love
becomes mutual promotion.

Bataille explodes in that very moment: genuine eroticism requires expenditure without return gift that expects nothing back, vulnerability that calculates no advantage. social media makes such expenditure impossible because every gesture is automatically measured, recorded, optimized for future performance.

social media captures not just our attention but our capacity for gift-giving, for useless expenditure, for the kind of
love
that makes no economic sense.

death drive of engagement

freud’s death drive is not simply destructive it is the compulsion to repeat, to return to an earlier state, to find satisfaction in the very structure of unsatisfaction.
social media platforms are death drive machines: they provide enough stimulation to keep us engaged but never enough satisfaction to make us stop.

the endless scroll, the infinite feed, the perpetual notification these create a state of chronic arousal without resolution. we are always about to find what we’re looking for but never quite finding it. this is not a bug in
system
. this is
system
.

under neoliberalism, even our death drive is monetized. our compulsive scrolling generates data. our addictive engagement creates advertising revenue. our inability to log off becomes the foundation of trillion-dollar market valuations.

remainder is
You
: a loop of yearning monetized.

resistance and the ungovernable remainder

yet something always escapes.
Bataille called it
La Part maudite
that surplus that can’t be absorbed into the system of production and exchange. D&G called it “lines of flight”movements of
désir
that escape capture by the apparatus.

even under total platform capture,
love
retains something ungovernable. moments when the gaze of the
Other
breaks through the screen, when touch transcends its documentation, when presence overwhelms its representation.

these moments are not outside the system they emerge from within it, as glitches, as lags, as
Real
that interrupts the smooth functioning of the simulacrum.

question is not how to escape social media (there is no outside) but how to practice
love
as a form of resistance to its logic. how to gift without return, to be vulnerable without strategy, to encounter the
Other
without optimization.

One
might say this means: posting without checking metrics. loving without documenting. being present without proving it. practicing what C might call aesthetic sabotage small acts of beauty that can’t be captured by the algorithm.

towards a non-entrepreneurial intimacy

what would it mean to love outside market logic while remaining inside market conditions?

perhaps it means learning to fail better. to be inefficient lovers, unoptimized partners, unmarketable selves. to practice forms of intimacy that generate no content, no data, no measurable outcomes.

to touch without photographing.
to feel without sharing.
to be together without broadcasting.

this is not digital detox or nostalgic return.
this is the practice of the ungovernable within the apparatus of total governance.

love
as the art of what can’t be sold, even when everything is for sale.

Beloved
does not respond to our content.
they respond to our capacity to disappear from the feed and reappear in the flesh.
to offer what can’t be optimized:
presence without performance,
gift without return,

love
without metrics.

epilogue: the blue light flickers

late at night, alone with the screen, the neoliberal
Sujet
scrolls thru simulations of connection.
they know it is not real =? they scroll anyway.

the blue light illuminates their face like a modern campfire around which no stories are told, only consumed.

yet sometimes in the gap between posts, in the lag of the loading screen, in the moment before the notification arrives something else emerges. a flicker of
Real
. a glimpse of what
love
might be if it were not a startup, not a brand, not a performance.

this flicker is not the solution. it is the question that keeps the system from closing completely. the remainder that can’t be metabolized. the gift that expects no return.

system
will try to capture even this, but something always escapes.

something ungovernable.
something that can’t be optimized.
something that still remembers how to love outside the logic of the market.

the revolution will not be monetized.
but it might be tender.

Hegel's recognition, Nietzsche's amor fati and Beauvoir's critique of romantic love.

love
presents philosophy with one of its most enduring paradoxes: how can
Self
maintain its integrity while simultaneously dissolving into union (one might argue Vereinigung von Egoisten by Stirner) with
Other
? this question has occupied everyone, each offering distinctive insights into the nature of
love
’s transformative power. the tension between
self-preservation
and
self-transcendence
in romantic
love
reveals fundamental questions about
identity
,
reconnaissance
and the very possibility of authentic encounter with
Other
.

C will traverse the philosophy of
love
, examining how different traditions have understood this paradox. One will investigate whether
love
represents a form of
self-dissolution
that leads to authenticity or a dangerous abandonment of selfhood. through Hegel’s dialectical understanding of
Anerkennung
to Nietzsche even Levinas’s ethics of
rapport de face à face
, One might uncover the complex dynamics at play when the
Self
encounters its most intimate
Other
.

philosophical foundation of
love
as
self-transcendence

Hegel’s
Herrschaft und Knechtschaft
in romantic relationships

“Das Selbstbewußtsein ist an und für sich, indem, und dadurch, daß es für ein Anderes an und für sich ist; d.h. es ist nur als ein Anerkanntes…”

(Self-consciousness exists in and for itself inasmuch, and only inasmuch, as it exists in and for itself for another, i.e. inasmuch as it is acknowledged…)

marxist.org: Herrschaft und Knechtschaft ($178)

Hegel’s analysis of
Anerkennung
in the
Phänomenologie des Geistes
might provide a framework for understanding the dynamics of
love
. in romantic relationships, One encounters a unique form of the
Herrschaft und Knechtschaft
, where both parties simultaneously seek
Anerkennung
while offering it to
Other
. unlike the asymmetrical power dynamics of Hegel’s original formulation,
love
presents the possibility of mutual
Anerkennung
, what hegel calls “anerkennung der anerkennung.”

“…Sie anerkennen sich als gegenseitig sich anerkennend.”

(…They recognize themselves as mutually recognizing one another.)

marxist.org: Herrschaft und Knechtschaft $184

the
Beloved
becomes essential to Lover’s self-understanding, yet this dependency creates a vulnerability that mirrors the
knecht
’s position. however, in mature
love
, both parties oscillate between positions of dependence and independence, creating a dynamic equilibrium rather than a fixed hierarchy. Lover seeks to be recognized not merely as a universal human being, but as this particular, irreplaceable individual with unique qualities and
Désirs
.

Lover who takes is not thereby made richer than the other; he is enriched indeed, but only so much as the other is. So too the giver does not make himself poorer, by giving to the other he has at the same time and to the same extent enhanced his own treasure (compare Juliet in Romeo and Juliet [ii. 1. 175-77: “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep;] the more I give to thee, The more I have”).

marxist.org: Love by Hegel 1797/8

this
gegenseitige Anerkennung
in
love
transcends the life/death struggle of the
Herrschaft und Knechtschaft
because both parties have already acknowledged their mortality and finitude. the
Beloved
’s potential loss; through death, departure or withdrawal of
love
, creates the existential urgency that drives the need for
Anerkennung
but without the violence of the original struggle.

Aufhebung
applied to intimate bonds

Hegel’s concept of
Aufhebung
, simultaneously meaning to preserve, cancel, and elevate, offers a sophisticated model for understanding
love
’s transformative dynamics. in intimate relationships,
Self
undergoes a process of
aufheben
(sublation) where previous modes of being are both “preserved” and “transcended”. the individual identity is not simply <del>annihilated</del> but elevated to a higher form through
Synthese
with
Other
.

this process occurs across multiple dimensions. Lover’s particular
Désirs
and preferences are preserved but transformed through encounter with the
Beloved
’s different perspective. individual freedom is cancelled in its absolute form but elevated to a new kind of freedom within relationship. the self’s boundaries are simultaneously maintained (Lover remains a distinct individual) and transcended (through empathetic identification with the
Beloved
).

the genius of hegel’s concept lies in its recognition that true transformation requires the preservation of what is being transformed.
love
that simply dissolves individual identity into undifferentiated union fails to achieve genuine
Aufhebung
. instead, it represents a regression to an earlier, less developed form of consciousness.
authentic love
maintains the tension between
Self
and
Other
while creating new possibilities for both.

Anerkennung
and need for
Other

the
Beloved
serves as a unique form of mirror in which the
Self
discovers aspects of itself that remain invisible in solitary reflection. this
Anerkennung
goes beyond mere acknowledgment of existence to encompass the validation of the
Self
’s deepest values,
Désirs
and aspirations. Lover seeks to be seen not only as they are but as they might become through the relationship.

this need for
Anerkennung
creates what one might call the “vulnerability of
love
”,
Self
becomes dependent on
Other
’s acknowledgment for its own self-understanding. yet this vulnerability is not simply weakness; it represents an opening to transformation that would be impossible within the closed circuit of self-relation.
Other
’s
Anerkennung
has the power to call forth aspects of the
Self
that would otherwise remain
dormant
.

the specificity of
Anerkennung
in
love
distinguishes it from other forms of social acknowledgment. while One might receive
Anerkennung
for achievements or social roles from many people, the
Beloved
’s
Anerkennung
touches something more fundamental, our essential worth as a unique individual. this is why the withdrawal of
love
can be so devastating; it threatens not just happiness but the very foundation of self-understanding.

différ(e/a)nce
between
self-annihilation
and
self-transcendence

the distinction between self-annihilation and
self-transcendence
is crucial for understanding healthy versus pathological forms of
love
. self-annihilation involves the complete surrender of individual identity,
désirs
and boundaries in service of the relationship. this form of
love
appears “selfless” but actually represents a failure to achieve genuine intimacy because it eliminates one of the parties necessary for “authentic encounter”.

self-transcendence
, by contrast, involves the expansion of the
Self
’s boundaries while maintaining its essential core. Lover develops new capacities for empathy, understanding and care while remaining grounded in their own values and identity. this form of
love
requires the courage to risk oneself without losing oneself, a delicate balance that mature relationships must continually negotiate.

the capacity for
self-transcendence
depends on what psychologists call
différenciation
, the ability to maintain One’s sense of
Self
while remaining emotionally connected to
Other
. without adequate
différenciation
,
love
becomes either
fusion
(loss of individual identity) or isolation (inability to form genuine intimacy). the challenge is to understand how the
Self
can remain true to itself while being fundamentally transformed by
love
.

C reflects on this challenge through lived experience. in moments of profound connection with
Other
, has felt the simultaneous pull toward
dissolution
and the necessity of maintaining individual authenticity. this tension is not a problem to be solved but a dynamic to be navigated, the very
mouvement
through which
love
reveals its transformative power while preserving the integrity of those who
dare
to enter its domain.

nietzschean challenge to romantic
love

Übermensch
as
One
who creates values in
love

Nietzsche’s concept of the
Übermensch
presents a radical challenge to conventional romantic
love
.
Übermensch
creates values rather than discovering them, suggesting that Lover must actively construct the meaning of their relationship rather than appealing to external authorities or universal principles of
love
. this creative dimension of
love
requires what Nietzsche calls “the courage to be oneself” even within intimate relationship.

“Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können.”

(One must have chaos within oneself to give birth to a dancing star.)

DeutshesTextArchiv: Nietzsche: Also sprach Zarathustra (p21)

if there would be a
Nietzschean Lover
, they might refuse to diminish themselves to fit conventional expectations of romantic partnership. instead, they bring their full creative power to bear on the relationship, making it a work of art rather than a conformity to social norms. this approach to
love
requires both parties to be value-creators, actively shaping the terms of their encounter rather than accepting
predetermined roles
.

this creative approach to
love
challenges the notion that there is one “true” way to love or be in relationship. the
Übermensch
in
love
experiments with different forms of intimacy, commitment and partnership; creating unique solutions to the problems of human connection. this experimental attitude requires the courage to fail, to disappoint and to be disappointed, risks that conventional romantic
love
seeks to minimize through social conventions and legal contracts.

One might argue that the danger of the Nietzschean approach is that it can lead to a form of
aesthetic narcissism
where the relationship becomes primarily a vehicle for self-expression rather than genuine encounter with
Other
. the challenge is to maintain creative authenticity while remaining open to the
Beloved
’s own creative powers and their potential to transform the relationship in unexpected directions.

critique of romantic
love
as
ressentiment
and
weakness

Nietzsche’s critique of romantic
love
as
ressentiment
exposes the potentially reactive dimensions of conventional romantic attachment. Lover who seeks completion through the
Beloved
may be motivated by a sense of inadequacy or weakness rather than strength and abundance. this form of
love
seeks to fill a void rather than to overflow with creative energy.

the symptoms of resentful
love
include possessiveness, jealousy and
désir
to control the
Beloved
’s freedom. Lover who can’t bear the
Beloved
’s independence or growth may be seeking to diminish them to manageable proportions. this diminishment serves the Ego’s need for security but destroys the very qualities that originally attracted Lover to the
Beloved
.

the alternative to resentful
love
is what one might call “
love
from strength”, the capacity to love the
Beloved
’s growth, independence and even their potential departure. this form of
love
requires the security that comes from self-creation. Lover who loves from strength can bear the
Beloved
’s otherness without seeking to reduce or control it.

amor fati
applied to relationship difficulties

Nietzsche’s concept of
amor fati
(love of fate) offers a distinctive approach to relationship difficulties and conflicts. rather than seeking to eliminate problems or create perfect harmony, Lover learns to affirm even the difficult aspects of relationship as necessary components of
love
’s full reality. this affirmation is not passive acceptance but active embrace of relationship’s complete emotional spectrum.

the practice of
amor fati
in
love
requires the courage to say “yes” to the
Beloved
’s difficult qualities, their moods, limitations and flaws; not despite these qualities but because they are part of the
Beloved
’s unique reality. this affirmation extends to One’s own difficult emotions; jealousy, anger, disappointment, as natural components of
love
’s intensity rather than problems to be solved.

C reflects on how this approach transforms the meaning of relationship conflict from threat to opportunity. arguments, misunderstandings and periods of distance become occasions for deeper understanding rather than evidence of relationship failure. Lover learns to find the hidden gifts in relationship difficulties, the growth that comes from working through problems, the intimacy that emerges from sharing vulnerability.

tension between
Selbstüberwindung
and
Selbstaufopferung

Nietzschean emphasis on
Selbstüberwindung
(self-overcoming) creates a productive tension with
love
’s call to
Selbstaufopferung
(self-sacrifice). Lover must navigate between the duty to develop their own potential and the
désir
to serve the
Beloved
’s needs. this tension can’t be resolved through simple formulas but requires ongoing negotiation and creative solution.

Selbstüberwindung
in
love
involves the willingness to grow beyond One’s current limitations for the sake of the relationship.
Beloved
becomes a catalyst for self-development rather than an obstacle to it. however, this
Selbstüberwindung
must be distinguished from
Selbstaufopferung
that involves the abandonment of one’s essential nature or values.

creative tension between
Selbstüberwindung
and
Selbstaufopferung
generates what C might call
gegenseitig werden
, a form of union where both parties are simultaneously transformed through their authentic encounter.

Simone de Beauvoir’s foundational Critique in
Le Deuxième Sexe
and
reconceptualizations

De Beauvoir’s revolutionary analysis in
Le Deuxième Sexe
reveals how romantic
amour
has historically functioned as a mechanism for women’s
subordination
disguised as transcendence. Her foundational insight,

“On ne naît pas femme, on le devient”

(One is not born, but rather becomes, woman)

extends to the realm of romantic experience, where
Women
learn to seek their identity through relationship with men.

Woman who loses herself in romantic
amour
becomes what de Beauvoir calls
l'être relatif
(the relative being), existing only in relation to the masculine subject. this constitutes a form of alienated labor where Women’s emotional and creative energies are channeled into sustaining masculine projects rather than developing their own.

“L’amour authentique devrait être fondé sur la reconnaissance réciproque de deux libertés ; chacun des amants s’éprouverait alors comme soi-même et comme l’autre ; aucun n’abdiquerait sa transcendance, aucun ne se mutilerait ; tous deux dévoileraient ensemble dans le monde des valeurs et des fins. Pour l’un et l’autre l’amour serait révélation de soi-même par le don de soi et enrichissement de l’univers.”

(Authentic love should be founded on the reciprocal recognition of two freedoms; each of Lovers would then experience themselves as themselves and as the other; neither would abdicate their transcendence, neither would mutilate themselves; both would unveil values and ends together in the world. For both, love would be self-revelation through self-giving, and enrichment of the universe.)

de Beauvoir’s analysis of romantic
amour
as women’s trap remains influential, One might argue with contemporary feminist theorists that there are significant limitations in de Beauvoir’s approach that have led to productive misunderstandings within feminist discourse.

bell hooks in All About Love, offers a critique of individualistic approaches to love that can be read as challenging de Beauvoir’s emphasis on independence. hooks argues that,

“Love is an action, never simply a feeling.”

and critiques the ways that patriarchal culture has shaped our understanding of love to privilege independence over interdependence.

C might argue that de Beauvoir’s analysis, while politically necessary, contributed to what might be called
epistemic injustice
by Fricker regarding Women’s ways of knowing. by privileging rational, individualistic models of
authentic amour
, de Beauvoir may have inadvertently delegitimized alternative forms of knowledge and relationship that could offer resources for feminist transformation.

ultimate question: crossing limits for
Other

paradox of self-boundary dissolution

as One approaches the culmination of this philosophical journey, One encounters the most profound question in the phenomenology of
love
: when the
Self
crosses its own limits for
Other
, does this represent an act of
abjection
(a degrading loss of selfhood) or does it constitute a sacrificial offering of limits that enables genuine encounter and the possibility of
jouissance
? this question cuts to the heart of
love
’s transformative power and its potential dangers.

C recognizes that the crossing of limits in
love
is not merely metaphorical but involves concrete decisions to extend beyond one’s comfort zone, established boundaries, and even deeply held values for the sake of the
Beloved
. this might involve the introvert who learns to socialize for their gregarious partner, the independent person who accepts interdependence, or the rational individual who embraces emotional vulnerability. each crossing represents a risk, the risk of losing oneself in the process of loving
Other
.

Julia Kristeva’s concept of
abjection
provides one lens for understanding this boundary crossing.
abjection
involves the dissolution of the subject-object distinction that maintains psychic stability. when the
Self
crosses its limits for
Other
, it risks entering the realm of the abject, that
corporeal reality
where identity becomes fluid and boundaries dissolve. this dissolution can be experienced as either
liberation
or
terror
, depending on the
Self
’s capacity to maintain enough coherence to survive the crossing.

yet this same boundary crossing can be understood through Hegel’s
Aufhebung
. the
Self
that crosses its limits for
Other
does not simply dissolve but undergoes a process of
sublation
where previous limitations are simultaneously “preserved”, “cancelled” and “elevated”. the introvert who learns to socialize does not cease to be introverted but develops a new, more complex form of selfhood that encompasses both solitude and sociability.

sacrifice of limits as creative act

the sacrifice of limits in
love
can be understood as a fundamentally creative act rather than a passive submission. when the
Self
chooses to extend beyond its established boundaries for the sake of the
Beloved
, it participates in what One might call
the creative destruction of selfhood
. this destruction is not nihilistic but generative, it creates space for new possibilities of
werden
that were impossible within the previous configuration of
Self
.

this creative dimension of limit-crossing distinguishes healthy
self-transcendence
from pathological
self-destruction
. Lover who creatively sacrifices limits remains an active agent in their own transformation, choosing which boundaries to cross and maintaining the capacity to establish new boundaries as needed. this creative sacrifice requires what C might call
conscious vulnerability
, the deliberate choice to risk oneself for the sake of expanded possibility.

the sacrifice of limits for
Other
involves what Levinas calls “
substitution
of the
Self
for
Other
.” this
substitution
is not a loss of Id but a discovery of Id’s deeper foundation in ethical responsibility. the
Self
that crosses its limits for the
Beloved
discovers that its capacity for
self-transcendence
is not an accident but its essential nature. through sacrificing limits, the
Self
paradoxically discovers its
limitless capacity
for transformation and growth.

C reflects on how this sacrificial dimension of
love
connects to religious and mystical traditions that understand
self-transcendence
as the path to
authentic selfhood
. the Mystic who dissolves Ego for Union with Divine and Lover who crosses limits for the
Beloved
may be engaging in parallel processes of discovering the
Self
’s true nature through apparent self-loss. both discover that the boundaries they thought essential were actually constraints preventing fuller realization of their potential.

“Only when it is a duty to love, only then is love eternally secured against every change, eternally made free in blessed independence, eternally and happily secured against despair.”

- Soren Kierkegaard - Works of Love (p. 17-35)

jouissance
and the
ecstasy
of boundary dissolution

the crossing of limits in
love
creates the possibility of what Lacan calls
jouissance
, a form of pleasure that exceeds the Ego’s capacity for integration and threatens the stability of established identity. this excessive pleasure is not simply physical but involves the ecstatic dissolution of the subject-object distinction that normally organizes conscious experience.

jouissance
in
love
occurs when the boundaries between
Self
and
Other
become so permeable that normal categories of experience break down. Lover experiences what mystics call Union, a state of consciousness where the distinction between Lover and
Beloved
temporarily dissolves into a shared field of
werden
. this dissolution is simultaneously terrifying and ecstatic, representing both the death of the Ego and the birth of a new form of consciousness.

the relationship between
jouissance
and
abjection
reveals
love
’s fundamental ambiguity. the same boundary dissolution that creates ecstatic Union also threatens psychic stability. Lover who experiences
jouissance
walks the edge between transcendence and madness, between spiritual elevation and psychological dissolution. this edge-walking requires what C might call
ecstatic courage
, the willingness to risk sanity for the sake of genuine encounter with
Other
.

the temporality of
jouissance
differs from ordinary
temporal experience
. in moments of ecstatic Union, chronological time dissolves into what Heidegger calls
Augenblick
(the moment of vision), a temporality that encompasses
past
,
present
and
future
in a single eternal now. Lover experiencing
jouissance
discovers that
love
’s intensity can’t be contained within the linear flow of ordinary time but creates its own temporal dimension.

the
Aufhebung
of self-limitation

this
Aufhebung
of
self-limitation
involves three simultaneous movements:
preservation
of the self’s capacity for boundary-setting,
cancellation
of specific limits that prevent growth and
elevation
of the
Self
to a new level of complexity that can encompass both limitation and transcendence. Lover learns to be both self-contained (bounded) and self-transcendent (boundless).

C observes that;

preservation
aspect of this
Aufhebung
ensures that the
Self
maintains its capacity for judgement and choice. Lover who crosses limits for the
Beloved
does not become incapable of saying
"no"
but develops a more sophisticated understanding of when boundaries serve growth and when they prevent it. this preserved capacity for limitation prevents the complete dissolution that characterizes abjection.

cancellation
aspect involves the willing surrender of limits that no longer serve the
Self
’s development. Lover recognizes that many boundaries are arbitrary constructions rather than essential features of Id. the willingness to experiment with these boundaries creates space for new forms of selfhood to emerge.

elevation
aspect involves the development of what one might call
meta-boundary awareness
(not VR…), the capacity to consciously choose One’s relationship to limitation. Lover who achieves this elevated perspective can cross limits when appropriate while maintaining them when necessary, creating a dynamic rather than static relationship with personal boundaries.

erotic dimension of limit-crossing

erotic dimension of crossing limits for
Other
reveals how sexual intimacy becomes a laboratory for exploring the boundaries of selfhood. in erotic encounter, Lover discovers limits they didn’t know they had and finds themselves willing to cross boundaries they thought were
absolute
. this crossing is not merely physical but involves emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of boundary dissolution.

erotic crossing of limits creates what C might call
consensual vulnerability
, mutual agreement to risk selfhood for the sake of deeper intimacy. this vulnerability is not
passive victimization
but
active participation
in the creation of new forms of connection. Lovers~ become co-creators of their own transformation through their willingness to risk their established identities.

the temporality of erotic limit-crossing reveals how sexual intimacy creates its own
temporal dimension
where ordinary concerns about past and future dissolve into intense
presentness
. Lover crossing limits for the
Beloved
discovers that erotic time differs from chronological time (
la durée
), creating space for experiences that would be impossible within the constraints of ordinary
temporal consciousness
.

Lovers
develop their own vocabulary for describing experiences that have no names in ordinary discourse. this linguistic creativity reflects the way crossing limits generates new forms of meaning that can’t be captured in established conceptual frameworks.

eternal
return of
love
’s question

philosophical exploration of
love
’s paradox reveals that the question of
self-dissolution
vs.
self-transcendence
can’t be answered definitively but must be lived creatively by each lover in their
Einzigartige
(
unique
) circumstances. the crossing of limits for
Other
represents both greatest risk and greatest opportunity in human existence,
risk of losing Oneself
and
opportunity of finding Oneself more fully
.

distinction between
abjection
and
Aufhebung
in
love
depends not on the fact of boundary crossing but on the manner and consciousness with which it is undertaken.

achievement of
jouissance
through limit-crossing represents
love
’s ultimate possibility, the ecstatic discovery of new forms of consciousness and connection that transcend the ordinary boundaries of individual existence. this achievement requires courage to risk everything for the sake of
authentic encounter
with
Other
, while maintaining enough selfhood to survive and integrate the experience.

eternal return of
love
’s question (whether to cross limits for
Other
) reveals
love
as an ongoing practice rather than a final achievement. each moment of relationship presents choice between safety and risk, between
preservation
and
transformation
, between the (un)known
Self
and the unknown possibilities that emerge through encounter with the
Beloved
.

Lover who seeks to eliminate the tension between
self-preservation
and
self-transcendence
misses
love
’s essential dynamic. the wisdom lies not in choosing one side of the paradox but in
learning to dance with tension
itself, finding in that dance the very creativity that makes
love
a source of ongoing transformation and growth.

in the end, the crossing of limits for
Other
reveals itself as “both”;
abjection
and
Aufhebung
,
dissolution
and
transcendence
,
death
and
(re)birth
.
love
’s deepest gift is not the resolution of its contradictions but the capacity to hold multiple truths simultaneously, finding in that capacity the very foundation of human wisdom and the source of
love
’s endless renewal.

exploration of
love
thus returns one to
love
itself, not as a
problem
to be solved but as a
mystery
to be lived, not as a
question
to be answered but as a
practice
to be embodied, not as a
destination
to be reached but as a
journey
to be undertaken to world through the radical act of loving
Other
completely.

“I remain committed, until the end, to the struggle for liberation and to the beauty and love it creates.”

“Capitalist modernity is a system based on the denial of love.”

most interpretations of the stranger are more absurde than Meursault himself
-C

the
petrified interpreters

the critical landscape surrounding Camus’s
l'étranger
has crystallized into what one might call
l'absurdisme pétrifié
(the petrified absurdisme) that transforms living dialectical movement into dead taxonomical matter. these petrified interpreters, in their “zealous pursuit of systematic understanding”, have committed the ultimate irony: they have become more static, more emotionally barren, and ultimately more absurde than the protagonist they claim to analyze.

this interpretive violence reveals itself most clearly in how critics treat the absurde as a philosophical rest stop what the Kurds might recognize in their saying
"dünya boştur lo"
(the world is empty). but notice the linguistic particle
"lo"
this isn’t mere statement but exclamation, a moment of saturated consciousness that resists theoretical capture. the
"lo"
carries the weight of sudden recognition, an emotional punctuation that transforms philosophical observation into lived experience. it’s absurde to name absurdity itself, because the moment one classify what should remain fluid, one might kill what should live.

the irony deepens when one consider that Camus himself uses the word
absurde
only once in the entire novel and significantly, at the very end, in Meursault’s final recognition:

Du fond de mon avenir, pendant toute cette vie absurde que j’avais menée, un souffle obscur remontait vers moi à travers des années qui n’étaient pas encore venues et ce souffle égalisait sur son passage tout ce qu’on me proposait alors dans les années pas plus réelles que je vivais.

This single deployment of
absurde
comes not as philosophical declaration but as lived recognition, emerging from
du fond de mon avenir
(the depths of futurity) to retrospectively illuminate a life that was absurde precisely because it was lived rather than theorized. the petrified interpreters have built entire theoretical
édifices
around a word that appears once, in a moment of temporal vertigo where past and future collapse into present recognition.

the dialectical trajectory: beyond being-nothing-becoming

against the
petrified interpreters
, Meursault embodies what one might call
la conscience processuelle
processual consciousness that refuses static categorization. the critical error lies in treating his apparent emotional absence in the first part as permanent philosophical position rather than recognizing it as the first movement in a dialectical trajectory.

consider his transformation in what Foucault would recognize as the disciplinary space of the prison. this isn’t merely punishment but what Foucault calls the “disciplinary gaze”a mechanism that produces subjects through surveillance and normalization. yet Meursault resists this subjectification in fascinating ways. the prison, intended to reform and normalize, instead becomes the space where he achieves his most authentic self-understanding.

in the final chapters, Meursault admits:
"Pour la première fois depuis bien longtemps..."
he thought about marie, his mother, even his father (not with exact phrase though). this confession reveals not the emergence of emotion from emptiness but the recognition of what was always there, beneath the surface of social expectations. the prison, paradoxically, liberates him from the prison of social performance.

Patrick McCarthy’s analysis recognizes that Meursault evolves rather than remaining frozen in indifference, but one must push further: this evolution isn’t linear progression but what Deleuze might call
becoming
a continuous variation that resists final capture. Meursault doesn’t move from being to nothing to becoming in Hegelian succession; he exists in a state of permanent becoming that the petrified interpreters can not grasp.

the temporal rest and universal recognition

absurdisme
, properly understood, functions as
un repos temporel
a temporal rest in the timetable of human experience. it represents not a destination but a necessary pause, a moment of recognition that occurs across cultures and languages. the Kurdish
"dünya boştur lo"
demonstrates how this recognition emerges spontaneously in human consciousness, requiring no philosophical apparatus.

the danger emerges when consciousness attempts to theorize its own absurde recognition. this meta-absurde position being absurde about absurdity threatens what one might call
l'expulsion de la zone absurde
. the moment one clarify
absurdisme
systematically, one risk sliding into nihilism, that ultimate detachment and resignation from life that critics often mistake for
absurdisme
itself.

true
absurdisme
maintains what Deleuze calls
"immanence"
remaining within experience rather than transcending it through theoretical abstraction. Meursault’s resistance to explanation preserves this immanent engagement.

the ethics of
présence-être

critics who demand constructive ethics from
absurdisme
misunderstand Meursault’s fundamental operation. he embodies what one might call
l'éthique de la présence-être
an ethics of presence-being that requires no external guidance because it emerges from consciousness of the absurde itself.

Meursault
soulage
he relieves himself of conventional moral weight, achieving what the french captures better than english: he flies, he soothes, he unburderns himself through immediate experience. this isn’t nihilistic rejection but active engagement with the
ici-et-maintenant
(here-and-now).

Deleuze’s insight proves crucial here: one might not simultaneously live and think in the present (which was indeed a critique against
Cogito ergo sum
by René Descartes). most consciousness carries the weight of past and future, but rare individuals
"les quelques"
(the few) manage to think and live within what Deleuze calls
le clivage du présent pur
(the splitting of pure present). Meursault achieves this naturally, without buddhist discipline or philosophical technique.

the refusal of transcendence:
"je ne voulais pas le perdre avec Dieu"

Camus’s dismissal of religious solutions operates through what one might call
l'exclusion active
active exclusion rather than passive rejection. when the chaplain visits, Meursault’s response reveals his priorities with crystalline clarity:
"Il voulait encore me parler de Dieu, mais je me suis avancé vers lui et j’ai tenté de lui expliquer une dernière fois qu’il me restait peu de temps. Je ne voulais pas le perdre avec Dieu."

this refusal preserves authentic temporal experience against the intrusion of eternal speculation. the chaplain offers
l'éternité
; Meursault chooses
le temps limité
. this isn’t nihilistic rejection but what Foucault might recognize as resistance to pastoral power the refusal to confess, to seek salvation through self-revelation.

"cette grande colère"
and the opening to indifference

the novel’s climactic recognition emerges through what Camus calls
"cette grande colère"
this great anger that purges rather than destroys. the full passage reveals the complexity of Meursault’s final transformation:

Si près de la mort, maman devait s’y sentir libérée et prête à tout revivre. Personne, personne n’avait le droit de pleurer sur elle. Et moi aussi, je me suis senti prêt à tout revivre. Comme si cette grande colère m’avait purgé du mal, vidé d’espoir, devant cette nuit chargée de signes et d’étoiles, je m’ouvrais pour la première fois à la tendre indifférence du monde.

cette grande colère
functions as what Žižek might call an encounter with the
Real
that which resists symbolization. the anger purges
"du mal"
(evil/suffering) and empties him
"d'espoir"
(of hope), creating space for opening to
"la tendre indifférence du monde"
(the tender indifference of the world).

this
tendre indifférence
represents not cold detachment but cosmic neutrality that paradoxically enables authentic connection. Meursault experiences the world as
"si pareil à moi, si fraternel enfin"
so similar to himself, finally fraternal. the world’s indifference becomes tender precisely because it makes no demands, offers no false comfort, requires no performance of unfelt emotions.

the spectacle of execution and lacanian désir

Meursault’s final wish
"il me restait à souhaiter qu'il y ait beaucoup de spectateurs le jour de mon exécution et qu'ils m'accueillent avec des cris de haine"
represents the ultimate recognition of what lacan calls the other’s désir. he finally understands what society wants: not repentance or emotional display, but a clear target for their own anxieties about mortality and meaning.

this for spectacle reveals sophisticated understanding of social dynamics. Meursault chooses authentic hostility over false compassion, preferring honest hatred to performed pity. by accepting his role as object of societal hatred, he achieves freedom through what lacan might call “subjective destitution”the moment when the subject recognizes the fantasy that sustains their relationship to the other.

Foucault and the prison as laboratory

the prison sequences invite Foucaultian analysis of disciplinary power and its failures. the carceral system, designed to produce normative subjects through surveillance and routine, encounters in Meursault a consciousness that resists reformation. his cell becomes not a space of punishment but a laboratory for self-discovery.

Foucault’s analysis of the
panopticon
reveals how modern power operates through visibility and internalized surveillance. yet Meursault’s consciousness remains opaque to this disciplinary gaze. he observes himself observing, thinks about thinking, but never submits to the reformative logic that prison is meant to instill.

this resistance isn’t heroic defiance but something more subtle: a kind of ontological slipperiness that allows him to remain present while evading capture by disciplinary knowledge. the prison liberates him from social performance precisely because it removes the audience for such performance.

the linguistic unconscious: from
"lo"
to
"tendre indifférence"

the novel’s french reveals layers that translation often obscures. Camus’s precise, almost clinical prose style mirrors Meursault’s consciousness clear, direct, resistant to interpretive embellishment. the language itself performs the philosophical position rather than arguing for it.

the Turkish/Kurdish
"dünya boştur lo"
operates similarly the absurde is enacted through linguistic gesture rather than explained through theoretical discourse. the
"lo"
carries emotional weight that resists translation, just as Meursault’s consciousness resists psychoanalytic interpretation.

René Girard and the
désir mimétique

Girard’s analysis of désir mimétique illuminates Meursault’s relationship to social expectation. the pressure for him to grieve “properly” reveals the mimetic nature of emotional performance. society doesn’t simply want authentic emotion; it wants recognizable emotion that confirms social bonds and hierarchies.

Meursault’s resistance to emotional mimesis creates what Girard calls a “mimetic crisis”, a moment when the social order’s foundations become visible. his refusal to perform grief exposes the theatrical nature of conventional mourning, creating anxiety about the authenticity of everyone else’s emotional displays.

the continuing journey:
humaniste, vivant, réfléchi

against static readings, Meursault emerges as fundamentally dynamic
en procès
, in process. his significance lies not in representing a completed philosophical position but in demonstrating how consciousness can remain open, present, and engaged without guaranteed meaning.

the petrified interpreters who seek systematic doctrine miss the essential point: Meursault offers not philosophy to adopt but a way of being to consider. he might continue his journey with one
humaniste, vivant, réfléchi
and might teach some that the absurde is not conclusion but beginning, not impasse but path toward an assumed
ici-et-maintenant
.

the true
absurdisme
of
l'étranger
emerges through
la conscience active
, not frozen posture. Meursault, far from being a static monument to indifference, embodies a subject who thinks, feels, and resists demonstrating that consciousness can pass through the necessary movements of being, nothing, and becoming while remaining fundamentally alive.

in the end, the most absurde interpretation would be to consider his story finished. Meursault’s processual consciousness might continue, might invite some into the ongoing adventure of thinking and living without metaphysical guarantees, finding in
la tendre indifférence du monde
not coldness but the space for authentic human connection. thus, it made C sick to reread Albert Camus, just for the sake of
la langue française
.

navigating a delicate, fragile connection over distance and conflict, one might find these philosophical ideas provide a surprising clarity, not about the
other
person specifically, but about the general nature of
love
and
désir
. c would like to share how these thinkers illuminate the paradoxes.

Lacan’s objet petit a:
love
and the unfillable
lack

for Lacan,
love
is never the gift of something whole or complete. it’s, famously,

« donner ce que l’on n’a pas à quelqu’un qui ne le veut pas. »
— seminar 8 von 1960/61, le transfert
(translation: “love is giving something you don’t have to someone who doesn’t want it”)

this phrase might struck one deeply. it points to a fundamental absence at the heart of
désir
therefore of
love
. this absence is encapsulated in his famous concept of the objet petit a the elusive “object-cause of
désir
.” it’s not an object in the usual sense, but rather an impossible remainder, something always just out of reach, that keeps
désir
alive.

Lacan explains that what we
désir
is not the
other
’s presence itself but the lack in the
other
, the gap that signals something missing, something to be filled. this objet petit a haunts one’s relationships, ensuring that no matter how much closeness or affection is exchanged, something essential escapes full capture.

c reflects on experience, recognize how
désir
was never fully about the tangible moments c shared or the affectionate words exchanged. instead,
désir
seemed tethered to what remained unsaid, to a mysterious absence behind the
other
’s silence or emotional withdrawal. the distress over unclear messages and the waiting for feelings to be “sure” felt like trying to grasp something that by its nature slips away.

Lacan’s teaching reminds c that this lack isn’t a failure or a flaw; it’s the structure of
désir
itself. one does not
love
because the
other
completes us, but because the
other
is a site where our own lack is projected and made meaningful.

Žižek: catastrophe of “falling” in
love

building on Lacan, Žižek describes
love
as a kind of catastrophe something that violently disrupts the ordinary order of one’s lives. “falling” in
love
is not a gentle unfolding but a radical event that overturns how one see the world and oneselves.

Žižek argues that
love
is like discovering a “treasure” (agalma) hidden within the
other
, a mysterious core that transforms the be
love
d in our eyes. this treasure is not the sum of their qualities but the secret place where
love
suddenly “makes sense”, it’s both enchanting and destabilizing because it reveals that
love
is less about the actual person and more about how we displace our unconscious
désir
s.

in C’s story, this rings true. the sudden shifts long calls at strange hours, texts heavy with double meanings, emotional silences felt like glimpses of that “agalma”, a deeper unknown that could neither be fully grasped nor ignored. Žižek’s framing makes the emotional turbulence less like failure and more like the necessary shock of
love
’s revealing power.

Hegel:
love
as mutual
werden

where Lacan and Žižek focus on the psychic structure of
désir
and its disruptive force, Hegel offers a path toward resolution not by filling the lack, but by moving through it in the process of mutual recognition.

in phenomenology of spirit, Hegel argues about the
kampf um anerkennung
as the fundamental dynamic between self-conscious subjects. for him
love
is the dance where two selves seek to recognize each
other
as free and autonomous beings, not as mere objects or projections.

“this is love. i have my self-consciousness not in myself but in the other. i am satisfied and have peace with myself only in this other and i am only because i have peace with myself; if i did not have it then i would be a contradiction that falls to pieces. this other, because it likewise exists outside itself, has its self-consciousness only in me; and both the other and i are only this consciousness of being-outside-ourselves and of our identity; we are only this intuition, feeling, and knowledge of our unity. this is love, and without knowing that love is both a distinguishing and the sublation of this distinction, one speaks emptily of it.”

Hegel insists that
love
shalt evolve beyond the initial stage where each subject tries to impose their own
désir
s. instead,
love
’s true progression lies in the
aufhebung
a dialectical movement where conflict and
différence
are preserved and elevated into a higher unity. this sublation means that
love
becomes a shared
synthese
, an intersubjective bond forged through recognition of
différence
, pain and freedom.

reading this, one might realize the painful phases of mistrust and emotional distance in one’s experience are not just setbacks, but moments in this dialectical process. the slow rebuilding of trust, the complex
negotiations
of affection, and the recognition of mutual wounds are part of a larger movement toward
love
as a living, evolving relation.

Deleuze:
production désirante

Deleuze’s philosophy challenges the notion that
désir
is primarily lack or absence. instead,
désir
is a
force productive
an
agencement
of
flux
,
intensités
, and
werden
s.

in anti-oedipus, Deleuze (w/guattari) argue that
désir
does not seek to restore something lost, but to create new connections and possibilities. ruptures and conflicts like those that disrupt affection are not failures to be mourned but
des occasions de devenir
and new modes of
connexion
.

this perspective might encourage one to see the emotional uncertainty and waiting not as a dead-end but as a space for experimentation. rather than trying to “fix” what was lost or regain a past feeling, there is creative potential in embracing
changement
,
différence
and the unknown future of
connexion
.

C:
love
as an
ongoing movement

combining these philosophies, c see
love
not as a destination but as a dynamic movement between
absence
and
présence
,
konflikt
and
synthese
,
projection
and
reconnaissance
,
entfremdung
and
selbstverwirklichung
.

the waiting, the uncertainty, the emotional pain these are all part of
love
’s architecture, not evidence of its failure.
love
is the paradoxical act of giving what we do not have, being struck by the
other
’s unknowable core, struggling to recognize one an
other
and embracing
les flux productifs du devenir
.

in this light/dark, perhaps the most authentic act of
love
is the willingness to live with the tension of not knowing, to keep engaging the
other
without the illusion of fullness or certainty and to trust that the movement itself fractured, painful, beautiful is what makes
love
real.
